Dangerous effects and prevention of Smoking, alcohol and drug🚬🚬
Surveys and statistics show that use of drugs, smoking and alcohol has been on the rise especially among the youth. This is really a cause of concern as it could result in many harmful effects.
SMOKING
Smoking also paves the way to hard drugs. Tobacco has been used by humans for more than 400 years. It is smoked, chewed or used as a snuff. Tobacco contains a large number of chemicals including nicotine, an alkaloid.
Effects of nicotine
Nicotine stimulates adrenal gland to release adrenaline and noradrenaline hormone. It is poured in blood, through blood circulation it reaches to different parts of body including vital organs like heart, brain and kidneys. Both adrenaline and noradrenaline raises blood pressure and increase heart rate.
Smoking is associated with increased incidence of cancers of lung, urinary bladder and throat. Other diseases are bronchitis, emphysema, coronary heart disease, gastric ulcer, etc. Tobacco chewing is associated with increased risk of cancer of oral cavity.
Smoking increases Carbon monoxide (CO) content in blood and reduces the concentration of haembound oxygen. This causes oxygen deficiency in the body.
When one buys packets of cigarettes one can't miss the statutory warning that is present on the packing which warns against smoking and says how it is injurious to health. Yet, smoking is very prevalent in society, both young and old. Nowadays, e- cigarettes are becoming more common, ill effects of e-cigarettes are-E-cigarettes produce a number of dangerous chemicals including acetaldehyde, acrolein, and formaldehyde. These aldehydes can cause lung disease, as well as cardiovascular (heart) diseases.
Vaping can make you more likely to get asthma and other lung diseases.
Diseases and disorders of smoking
1. Lung cancer
2. Bronchitis: inflammation in respiratory tract
3. Emphysema: Deposition of mucous in the alveoli causes decreas in oxygen absorption and result in tension in the alveoli causes the coughing and break in the respiratory surface there by reducing exchange of gases.
4. Heart disease : Lumen of blood vessels become narrow which increases the blood pressure ( Hypertension)
5. Intestinal ulcer and other irregularities of guts.
ALCOHOL AND ALCOHOLISM
Ethyl alcohol is consumed as fermented beverages with low content of alcohol (beer,wine) and as distilled beverages with a relatively high alcohol percentage (brandy,rum,whiskey, gin) . This alcohol is rapidly absorbed from the wall of stomach and enters the blood stream within minutes. In the liver ,alcohol is converted into a more toxic substance acetaldehyde.
Effects of alcohol drinking-
1 Lowering of blood sugar level.
2. Affects cerebellum part of brain so control and coordination of body affected.
3. Liver is most affected organ-
Excess alcohol in blood causes increase in the synthesis of fats which is deposited in liver results in fatty liver syndrome.
The further stage of this are liver cirrhosis and biliary cirrhosis diseases.
4. Amnesia: loss of memory
5. Gastritis: it causes inflammation in the wall of stomach. In chronic cases the gastric ulcers .
6. Resistance of the body: Body resistance against diseases reduced.
7. Alcohol psychosis
WHAT IS ADDICTION?
Because of perceived benefits , these drugs are frequently used repeatedly. The most important thing which one fails to realize is the inherent addictive nature of alcohol, smoking and drugs.
Addiction is a psychological attachment to certain effects such as euphoria (false imagination) and a temporary feeling of wellbeing associated. These drives people to take them even when they are not needed or even when their use become self destructive.
With repeated use the tolerance level of body is also increased. Consequently, people take more doses with the time.
Further, they can't resist without these things.
In today's world, youth are becoming more addictive towards these ill habits. These can be due to depression and increase in competition.
This can lead to aggressive behavior, rebellious nature, loss of appetite, fluctuations in weight, change in sleeping and eating habits, lack of interest in personal hygiene.
Side effects include increased aggressiveness, mood swings, depression, abnormal menstrual cycle, excessive hair growth, deepening of voice in females. The intake of these substances during pregnancy can adversely affect the foetus.
In males, it can cause acne, increased aggressiveness, mood swings, depression, decreased sperm count , liver dysfunction, breast enlargement, baldness and many more.
PREVENTION AND CONTROL
As we know, "PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE".
Parenting that combines with high levels of nurturance and consistent discipline , has been associated with lowered risk of substance (tobacco, smoking and alcohol) abuse.
Some of the measures mentioned here would be particularly useful for prevention and control of alcohol and smoking among youth.
1 Avoid undue peer pressure
2. Education and counseling- Educate the young to face problems and stresses. Also, accept failures of life and accept disappointments .
It would also be worthwhile to channellise the energy into reading and exercising.
3. Seeking help from parents and family: Help from parents should be sought immediately so that they can guide appropriately. Help may even take from close friends or trusted relatives. This would help young to vent their feelings of anxiety and guilt.
4. Looking for danger signs - Alert parents need to look for and identify the danger signs. Even friends, if they find someone using addictives, should not hesitate to bring this notice to parents and the person concerned . This would help in initiating proper remedial steps or treatment.
5. Seeking professional and medical help: A lot of help is available in the form of highly qualified psychologists, psychiatrists and deaddiction and rehabilitation programs to help individuals who have unfortunately got in the quagmire of smoking and alcohol use.
With such help ,the affected individual with sufficient efforts and will power , can get rid of the problems completely and lead a perfectly normal and healthy life.
