What is Volkmann's process? Etiology and severity
Volkmann's ischemic contracture is a deformity of the hands, fingers and wrist caused by injured muscles of the forearm due to any reasons maybe accident, trauma or burn.
Etiology
Volkmann's ischemic contracture occurs when there is a lack of blood flow usually caused by increased pressure that results from swelling (compartment syndrome).
There are 3 levels of severity
1. Mild - flexion contracture of 2 or 3 fingers only, with no or without limited loss of sensation
2. Moderate - All fingers are flexed and the thumb is stuck in the palm, the wrist may be stuck in flexion and there is usually some loss of sensation in hand.
3. Severe - All the muscles of forearm that flexes and extends the fingers and wrist are involved, a severely disabled condition.
